I reckon the hassle of installing the cameras is a problem for the precious little things

They can stay away as far as I'm concerned. Wouldn't put them out with bodily fluids if they were on fire

There is also an experiment that could be tried which is to create a number of new downpipe connections in the existing guttering that are in addition to the existing ones and then run some angled downpipes from the front of the roof to the back of the roof coming out of the back wall of the stand,...

Get your tape out birdie. A 110mm (4") downpipe should drain 47 square metres of roof with no problem (except in torrential rain) If the actual guttering is 110mm (4") that's the same. Replacing the guttering with 154mm (6") would store a bit more before it disappears down the downpip...
