Shots player in World Cup squad

Post by Grayshott » Wed May 16, 2018 3:36 pm

Well done to Nick Pope - played five games for Shots in 2013.

He describes it as a difficult time in his career. We were 23rd when he joined on loan for 6 weeks.

Kiddy 0 Shots 0

Shots 0 Grimsby 3

Shots 3 Luton 3

Lincoln 0 Shots 1

Shots 2 Alfreton 3

Neil Webb - but his World Cup was before he played for Shots.

There may also be those who played in the 39-45 Wartime Shots team and then in the 1950 World Cup.

I remember Nick Pope being written off as a hopeless keeper without a future in the game. Alex McCarthy (Southampton player of the season) the same.

Just shows the wisdom and foresight of our supporters.

To be fair, nobody who saw Pope play for us thought he would be in England's World Cup squad within a few years. Both keepers have had excellent seasons.
Who knows we maybe saying the same about Lewis Ward one day in the future

Credit to McCarthy and Pope, at their respective clubs they would have only been there really as 2nd choice keepers at best but they've done very well with the chances they've been given. A testament to their characters that they've not gone backwards after tough loan spells. Could say that we helped them a lot by identifying where they needed to improve their game. I remember McCarthy letting a straight 40 yard shot go over his head and through his arms as he completely mistimed an attempt to push the ball over the bar vs Morecambe I think.

Most of us liked Lewis Ward and in terms of loanee goalkeeper's performances most would agree he has been the best loanee, but there is no guarantee that Lewis will match both Alex and Nick's achievements, that's all on Lewis and what he does with his opportunities. I think next season he will either be at a league one side on loan or maybe even Reading's 2nd choice keeper.

A close-ish one is Chris Powell.
11 games for us 1990.
Appeared 5 times for England his last game was Feb 2002 but he didn't make the squad for Japan/SKorea.
