The big Match revisited 1974

Post by shots1965 » Tue Apr 06, 2021 5:17 am

How refreshing it is to watch football from the 70s
No backwards sideways backwards sideways ... no VAR .... yawn yawn

Goalkeepers just kicking the ball up field, not farting around with it
Three games from division two
Man U v Forest
Fulham v York city
Notts county v Southampton

The above games, from a random program
TBMR...

Now my fav watch footie wise.

Bad stuff was state of the pitches.

Good stuff was most teams (bar Leeds) played to win a game, most action taking part in an around penalty areas.

Modern game - No doubt the skill level has improved and even fitness levels (apart from more injuries these days) BUT it is becoming so damned boring with tippy tappy stuff killing my interest.

The skill level by a lot of those players considering the state of those pitches was incredible at times.

Chuckled the other day when I think it was Terry Neill the Arsenal manager having a smoke in the dug out .
The other thing that was very noticeable was the offside rule, pretty non existent back then.

The modern game is gone for me..

I thought it was invented in 1992

Also my favourite programme.
I chose to watch this instead of the modern game. Sky cancelled years ago and never watch MOTD anymore.

Crowds, muddy pitches, tackling, 1 sub, no time wasting, no VAR, attacking football.

It was everything I loved about the game. Take all that away (+ add VAR) and the modern game at the top has all but died for me.
Lower level football still has some element of what I like but it has to be careful not to copy the elite too much more, otherwise it will go the same way completely which will be a sad day.

The programme is currently on 1979 and is on ITV 3 mid Saturday morning. Series link. You won't be disappointed.

Although it probably did happen you would have had a hell of a lot less cheating in those days and hardly any foreigners who are only here because of money 💰 of course!

Cheating did go on as Franny Lee used to enjoy a dive to win penalties, alot of foreign players have also brought some quality to the beautiful game as well

Yes I did say cheating occurred but not to the level we see today and yes we’ve had some quality imports and some average ones, I do find though that football was more entertaining those days than it is now!

The question is can we ever get it back ?
I very much doubt it.

I agree, Mick, but reducing the amount of foreigners both in football and in normal life would help IMO!

Is that because the shots were reborn?

There's no comparison to the cheating today-watch TBMR and count how many penalties AREN'T given then look at the mass of penalties given today for obvious diving, . I'd say that foreign footballers-beyond undoubted skill-have brought cheating to a new level-I would cynically suggest that a factor in considering to pay a fortune for-say-Naymer- is how many faux penalties they can get a season as well as the rest !!
I can't stand football today-it's about as meaningless as a FIFA video game, Really enjoy the old games -would only watch MOTD now if they did a MOTD revisited !!
